Company History

Moog Animatics was founded with the vision to be the first motion control provider to the automation market to provide true solutions instead of just motors. We first opened our doors in 1987, and in 1989 we released our first products based on the philosophy of understanding and satisfying our customer’s total need.

The philosophy of customer-focused innovation led toanimatics_milpitas_bldg a breakthrough in the automation industry in 1995 with the patented SmartMotor, winning Best Products of 1995 by Design News. Since then, Animatics has focused its control, amplifier and encoder technologies on the SmartMotor™ product line: the quintessential form of integrated motion control.

Two years later Animatics was named #212 of Inc. Magazine’s Fastest Growing Private Companies. Around that time Animatics also won the Editor’s Choice Award from Control Engineering Magazine, Product of the Year from Electronic Products Magazine, and Excellence in Design Award from Design News, among others. In 2002, the Silicon Valley Business Journal named Animatics their 19th fastest growing private company.

In the following years, Animatics grew and successfully navigated through more than one economic downturn and the bursting of the dot com bubble but following our customer-focused philosophy, remained the industry leader in motor size array, power, speed, and quality. Animatics was acquired by Moog, Inc. in May of 2011 and became Moog Animatics. Moog Inc. is a worldwide designer, manufacturer, and integrator of precision control components and systems. Moog's high-performance systems control military and commercial aircraft, satellites and space vehicles, launch vehicles, missiles, automated industrial machinery, wind turbines, marine and medical equipment.

Currently, Moog Animatics has launched our Class 5 SmartMotor™ product line, with five times faster processing capabilities and expanded features. Optional to the Class 5 SmartMotor™ is Combitronic™ communication, which utilizes a CAN serial point to link all SmartMotor™ servos, where any motor’s program can read, write or control any other motor creating one synchronized, multitasking machine from up to 120 compact SmartMotor™ servos. In addition, our Class 6 Industrial Ethernet lineup includes options for EtherNet/IP™, EtherCAT® and PROFIBUS® fieldbus communications. Finally, our new SL17 SmartMotor™ rounds out the product lineup as a low-cost entry into SmartMotor™ integrated servo technology.

Message from the Founder

The SmartMotor™ may be painted black, but it is really very green. Consider the following:

The SmartMotor™ is made in the same shaft and frame dimensions as open-loop step motors, but uses a small fraction of the power because it only uses as much power as the load physically needs.
