I'm working on an application using an SM1720 with GH17P10.

The system needs to maintain a persistent zero postion: i.e. during the startup sequence, it has to find the same shaft angle.
This is an angular position, and it's ok if the motor turns one or more times to get that shaft angle.

Do I need an external sensor (hall effect, optical etc), or is this achievable in software?

You can only find shaft angle within one revolution of the motor shaft. With the 10:1 gearhead, you will need some form of sensor to get you close.

Thank you! Works like a charm:
- hooked up hall sensor to left limit input
- move motor while periodically sending "d=UDI Rd" returns the index (external hall sensor) sensor state.
