TOPIC: step and direction

step and direction 5 years 6 months ago #845

Hello,
Can anybody direct me to the information I need to address my legacy smart motors by step and direction as I would a stepper motor? I hear that this is possible and it would be the easiest way for me to get my robotics app. up and running.

Thanks in advance for your help
Keith

Hi Keith,
The manuals for the legacy products are available at www.animatics.com/legacy-downloads.html?task=view

You may only need the following commands...

MS 'Set motor to Mode Step
MFMUL=4 'Multiply incoming counts by 4
MFDIV=7 'Divide incoming counts by 7
MSR 'Calculate Mode Step Ratio
G 'Begin following at that ratio
END

Thanks csearcy. I appreciate the information, it's been quite hard to come by. Forgive my inexperience here, but you're saying that I need to input the program you gave me (or something close)into my motors. Then they should be set up to run from step and direction signals.

Also, you mentioned that I can find the manuals at a specific website. I have been there but the manuals I've found don't directly or clearly address the issue --that I can find. If you are sure this info is there, I'll go through it all again and search with more related terms in hopes of turning up the needed info. Thanks again, and I apologize for asking yet another question

Hi Keith,
Those commands can be entered from the Terminal Window in our software. If you do it that way... the SmartMotor goes back to the default (Position Mode) when the power goes off. You do have to download those commands to the SmartMotor as a program for the commands to execute every time the system is powered up.

Page 47 of the following manual refers to the Mode Step commands... but you may only need to copy the example code I posted.

www.animatics.com/download/legacy/Users_GuideV5.pdf

What is the firmware revision of your motor? It should be on the motor label.
Can you connect to the motor via RS232?

Best Regards,
Chuck

Ok, the 2340D's have ver 4.77 and the 3430 has 4.15C. They were mfg'd in 2005.

Having to reload the program every time I boot up is not the best scenario... I've run 2 of them through the playground using the animatics proprietary connector regime but I'm having a problem with other one. I keep getting a out of range error as if the encoder detector has an element out, or something. I'm concerned about getting repair information on it. Animatics hasn't been the best help on any issues so far. I'm a small operator with legacy motors, so I'm probably pretty far down the priority list...

Thanks for the help. Much appreciated.

Keith
