We are testing the SM34165DT smart motor on our weather radar for support of Elevation control. When we run the Tuning tool we get very good position error results (~16 ticks). However, when we run the Playground utility the motor moves to the requested position but within 5 seconds the "Ba: over-current occurred" error comes up and the motor makes a lot of noise and starts to oscillate erratically. We called tech support and have sent the MDE and MDB commands to the motor in the playground terminal prior to commanding the motor to move. We also changed KV to 1000 and KA to 1000. None of these helped.
It sounds like you have a high inertia load. You can try using lower values for ADT (Accel/Decel Target). If that doesn't work, you may need to consider a planetary gearhead to reduce the inertia of the load.
Are there any good starting values for ADT and VT that you recommend?
I would start with VT=100000 (this is about 100rpm). I would set ADT=10 ...and work up from there.
