I recently obtained a SM2315 motor (version 4.40) and I've been having issues getting it to work.
I've only been testing the motor with the SMI SmartMotor Playground but the operation of the motor has been incredibly spotty. It would sometimes work when you first start it up that day but it would only work for a short period before stopping. And more recently, it hasn't been turning at all. Often, when it isn't working, it will send a Peak Over Current error the moment you telling to move.
The shaft of the motor spin freely and I can't see any mechanical reason why it wouldn't be able to turn.
Any clue as to what could be causing this issue?

Detection of peak over current is set by the voltage across the current sense resistor exceeding a set amount. That resistor could be going bad and may be cracked. The more it burns or cracks open, the higher the voltage. The more voltage dropped across the resistor, less is left for the motor windings. Peak over current by itself is not an operation-limiting fault and does not stop the motor. If this is the case, the motor itself is probably ok and just the current sense resistor is most likely shot.
Where on the circuit board would the sense resistor be located?
On the circuit board it is down one edge and is a small flat pack square resistor. It has a resistance of less than 1 ohm, so you may have difficulty getting a reading.
I probed around the all resistors along the edge but none of them where under 1ohm. They all generally fell into range between 10kohm and 10ohm, so I'm really not sure which one it is. I attached some pictures, if you would be able to point it out.
At this point I recommend replacing your current motor with a newer model. The one you have is quite outdated.
